Most young people will experiment with alcohol and/or drugs at some point in their adolescence and for the majority the risk of developing dependence is low. However even dabbling with drugs or drink can lead to a risk of physical harm, even death, as a result of overdose, accident whilst intoxicated or solvent abuse. Indeed, there are more deaths due to volatile substance abuse (ie glue, petrol etc.) in youths than any other illegal drug.
Parents have an important role in discussing the dangers of misusing substances with their children and to model responsible attitudes to drinking. Research shows that having a consistent adult who cares about a young person is a strong protective factor for reducing vulnerability in young people. It is also clear that young people who get involved in structured activities and sports are less likely to regularly misuse substances.

Where substance misuse, including alcohol, solvents, illegal or prescribed substances are beginning to cause concern and impact on key areas such as school or relationships, this is the time to seek advice and help through health services or local substance misuse services.
