The Dundee Family Protection Unit is a specialised team of police CID officers within Tayside Police. The team works jointly with the social work department's child protection team. As well as well as this joint work looking into abuse and neglect concerns for today's children and young people, the teams also deals with historical cases of abuse in relation to people who are now adults.

All police officers are alert to any potential risks for children and young people in any situation in which they become involved. They will, for example, pay particular attention to the needs and well being of any children who may be in a household where there are concerns of domestic violence or alcohol or drug misuse. If needs be they will alert other specialist police  or social work colleagues.

Along with social work colleagues, Tayside Police has the lead role in the assessment of risk that might be posed by registered and non-registered sex offenders.
