Child Protection Committees were first established in the 1970s/1980s as part of government policy to better co-ordinate local services for children and young people at risk of abuse and neglect. This was in response to a number of high profile cases that attracted national attention.
In 2002, the then Scottish Executive commissioned a national audit and review of child protection services in Scotland. One outcome of the report (It's Everyone's Job to Make Sure I'm Alright') was the strenghtening of policy and guidance in relation to child protection committees. Work already undertaken in Dundee significantly informed the development of the national guidance for child protection committees.
As part of the development of a more robust committee in Dundee, we decided to invite children and young people in Dundee to design a new logo for the committee. There was an art competition. And the design by young people in Craigie High School was chosen.
When they were designing the logo, young people said that the name was wrong. They said that 'Child Protection Committee' just meant younger kids. They said that they were young people and the name needed to include that. So we asked, "Ok, what do we call it?", and the answer led to the creation of the Dundee Children and Young Persons Protection Committee.
This storyboard shows how the original artwork was developed into the final logo.
